Do you remember the Android Lollipop presentation where we were shown Material Design with lots of cool animations? Since then, of course, the interfaces of the applications have really become “material”, but the animations have not worked out. The situation can be changed by the new motion system that Google has released. It will allow developers to implement very interesting animations. The goal of the motion system is to help users navigate and understand the connection between the application components. By the way, not so long ago Google invented a new control gesture in Android 11.
In 2018 Google introduced an updated Material Design 2.0, but even there were no advanced animations.
New Android Animations
The new system will allow interface elements to change their shape. For example:
- A list item will be able to expand smoothly across the entire screen, and a floating button will be able to transform itself into a modal window when clicked.
- Developers will be able to implement transitions between parts of the list.
- The new window animations will be changed.
- Dialog boxes can now appear with beautiful fade-animation.
So far, the animation is only available at the system level. For example, in Android settings.
The most interesting may be the transformation of the element. Now when you click on an element, it can be smoothly transformed into another part of the interface. For example, it can be a list where clicking on an element will smoothly open a new window to the whole screen. It can be a music player: clicking on the cover of a song will smoothly open a window with the music player. This interaction with the system makes the interface elements more coherent and understandable. The connection between each of the elements is traced.
In addition, an element can be transformed into another element not only if it is a detailed page that occupies the entire screen, but also in the case, for example, with a small menu. The dialer button may not open the keyboard full screen, and the song start button will only open the controls in a small area at the bottom of the interface.
Google has also worked on the desktop interface. Applications in DeX mode will have these interesting animations adapted to the large diagonal.
Application developers now have three-axis animations available. Fade-effect with a window appearing on the side, the same effect with a window appearing on the top or bottom and a smooth z-axis window appearing.
The least interesting is the new fade-through animation. It can be used when there is no clear connection between interface elements.
Android and iOS Animations
Why do people like iOS? Just because there are amazing animations – they are very smooth and pleasant. In a compartment with low touchscreen response in the iPhone, the user gets some special emotions. Not with Android devices. And I hope that with the new system of animation Google in this matter at least somehow can get closer to Apple.
When will there be applications with new animations?
This question remains open. Not so long ago the new motion system became available to users of the mobile interface framework Flutter, and it is possible that in the near future developers will put the animation in the foreground. Besides, it is quite a logical step, because in the question of design, in fact, you can move forward today only with the help of improved animation, because it is unlikely that something else will surprise users.
