What to do if your phone’s battery is swollen?

Before starting my story and giving advice, I would like to say the battery is the most dangerous part of the smartphone. I recall how batteries of the Galaxy Note 7 and other devices exploded. In some cases, this can cause serious injury and even death. This article will explain what to do if you have a swollen smartphone battery. These tips will also be relevant for other devices, because the batteries used are now universal.

If the battery looks like this, go to the service immediately.

What makes the phone’s battery swell?

There are many reasons why a battery swells. The main one is manufacturers, even top-end ones, try to save on battery or the space reserved for it inside the case. As a result, it does not work as it should, which can lead to failure.

The main reasons for swelling are:

  • Manufacturing defects
  • Frequently dropping the phone
  • Overheat
  • Ambient temperature differences
  • Poor chargers

The main reasons are clear, but I will comment on two of them. Once I was riding a motorcycle and I put my iPhone 5S in a bag on the tank. It was hot outside, the sun was shining, and a navigator was working on my phone. As a result, the smartphone got very hot. After a couple of days, I noticed that the battery was swollen. Another reason that everyone neglects – almost no one is serious about charger quality. It seems if it enters the outlet, then there is nothing to fear. I can only say that the water in the gas tank will also pour in the same way as gasoline. It’s just that the car won’t go anywhere.

Don’t save on the charger. It’s not necessary to buy the original, but at least buy a good quality charger.

How to know when the phone’s battery is swollen

If it is swollen, then it has increased in size. This is because during normal operation chemical reactions occur inside the battery. If something goes wrong, a large amount of gas is released and the battery inflates. This is also why the outer shell is made of an elastic film.

In the smartphone case, there is very little free space. Given this, any change in size will ruin the phone case. If the swelling is slight, one of the mounts may break or the back wall may bend slightly. Strong bloating can even break the screen.

What to do when your smartphone’s battery is swollen

The first option will allow you to safely return your smartphone to working capacity and the second will provide you with health risks!

If the smartphone is working and you accidentally notice small deviations in the geometry of the case, in general, nothing is at risk. Do not throw it away but get it serviced. A day, two, maybe even after a week the smartphone will still work, but still, it’s better not to delay. The service center will help you solve the problem quickly and safely.

If you left the smartphone on charge and in the morning it looks like a frightened fish, it’s better to take it to the service right away. Don’t put the smartphone in a bag or pocket, as it may catch fire at any time. I exaggerate a little, but it’s still not worth the risk.

In both cases, the service will try to repair the battery or replace it. I would recommend the second option. If you won’t change your smartphone for a couple of years, it’s better to replace the battery to preserve your phone’s life. If you want to buy a new smartphone in the near future, you can save money. Don’t buy a restored battery – it can simply reset the controller data. In this case, the battery will look like new, but it will work like an old one.

Now an option with extreme risk. I strongly do not recommend doing this myself, but I will describe the process, as the experts do.

When the battery is swollen you can find a special place where you can pierce the film. Gas will escape from the battery and then you can just fill the hole with sealant.

The likelihood of the battery returning to life doing it this way is very small. If possible, the battery will still work for a while, but not for long. Then you still have to change it.

It’s also worth noting that the gas inside is very toxic and inaccurate piercing can lead to ignition. You can find many such colorful torches on YouTube.

How often does the smartphone battery swell?

If the smartphone operates under normal conditions, it is charged with the original charger and the battery has not yet passed 500 charge-discharge cycles (usually they measure the battery life), you shouldn’t worry. The risk of bloating and battery explosion is negligible.

Just follow the recommendations in the article and everything will be fine. You should get many years out of your smartphone’s battery.
