Recently, many people have been talking about the new tracker from Fitbit, but for me, it is completely indifferent and I won’t buy it. Many will say I’m wrong and ask me how can I not like such a cool device. But yes, I can! My personal experience with using a large number of gadgets is proof of this. My opinion is subjective, but I have long abandoned activity trackers at hand. I’m ready to tell you why and listen to your opinion at the end. As usual, I pay readers a lot of attention and want to get to know them.
Pros of using activity trackers
In my opinion, activity trackers have only two advantages that can be considered significant. This is price and size. Perhaps someone will think of other advantages, but I can’t think of more than two. This was the first reason I refused the tracker, but more on that below.
I chose the phrase “activity tracker” since these gadgets are not related to fitness. I also don’t think these gadgets are smart. Therefore it’s not a smart watch either.
Everything is clear with the price. There are Chinese no-names, but they are built on the same common platform and just released under different brands. As a result, you can buy trackers from different manufacturers that work with one application. There is an option when different trackers of the same brand require different applications, but these trackers are quite inexpensive. Quality often leaves much to be desired.
With the advantages of a small size something on your hand is quite comfortable. If I already put something on my wrist, I don’t care what size it will be. It’s inconvenient for me to type with a watch on my wrist, but this is the same with both large and small devices. I agree that the sleeve for a large classic or smart watch fits more snugly, but not always.
I gave examples of why I consider the advantages of trackers dubious, now let’s talk about the immediate disadvantages.
Cons of fitness trackers
Their main disadvantage is weak functionality. They can do nothing but display time and count steps. The rest of the functions work every other time and the calculation of the data is often very conditional and approximate. Based on this, you cannot consider the gadget smart. It’s like a switch with Wi-Fi. Why is it smart? Maximum functionality!
There are so few functions in the tracker that I prefer to use ordinary watches you can buy for the same money and choose their design, rather than generic options. If the tracker supports changing straps, I still accept it. Otherwise, no.
“What about notifications from a smartphone?” you say. I consciously did not attribute this to advantages. Trackers, which give out at least some decent vibration, already cost similar to an inexpensive smart watch. These vibrate as well, but offer much more function. Plus, they are implemented better. Therefore, this is a disadvantage rather than a benefit.
Why I don’t advise to buy a new Fitbit
At one point, I started communicating with wearable electronics with the Fitbit Flex. It didn’t even have a screen and the charge progress could be seen on the panel with four indicators. Consistently lighting up, this showed a charge level of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. More information could be found in the app. At that time it was already very cool and I enjoyed using it as it was something new. Then I changed to other watches.
Last year, Google decided to go down Apple’s favorite path and buy Fitbit. This step is logical if you want to revive the brand or if you need its best practice for your product. Judging by the large number of leaks that periodically pop up here and there, the new tracker will be released very soon. It will be called Fitbit Charge 4.
The British MobileFun accessories store has already shown on its website two models of the device called Fitbit Charge 4 and Fitbit Charge 4 Special Edition. 2018 Fitbit Charge 3 was also sold in two versions: regular and special.
The problem is this device costs from $173 to $200 depending on the version. Even the presence of NFC just does not justify such a price for the tracker. For the money you can buy a good smart watch from Huawei or Samsung. iPhone users can even buy the Apple Watch Series 3 for about the same price.
Replaceable straps are also not cheap. To fork out for a backup will be $36. Well, okay, with Apple everyone is used to it, but Fitbit…
An additional nail in the price cap is driven by the new product not having GPS, which could somehow justify such a high price.
Fitbit has not received updates for a long time. Two years have passed since the release of the third generation, so the release of the new product seems very logical, but I wouldn’t buy it.
Which tracker to buy?
If you still want to buy a tracker, then I would not recommend buying something more expensive than $100. I would suggest looking at smart watches if you have the funds. They’re more functional, more convenient and will look decent. Moreover, almost all watches support the replacement of straps with universal ones.
Of course, Fitbit still has to wait, but at this price, they quickly fell off my list of recommendations. Against competitors, especially Xiaomi Mi Band 4, their purchase looks like a very dubious undertaking.
